LESSONS IN MUSIC FOR THE MODERN STUDENT
Ethan teaches a classical curriculum of piano repertoire, theory, and music history. Lessons are geared toward the learning outcomes and desires of the individual student. While some students may wish to focus on graded RCM examinations, others still may be interested in developing their passion and pianism purely for the appreciation of music and fun.
An essential element of his philosophy as a music teacher involves improvisation and the performance of music 'by ear' or 'off the page' rather than strictly studying written music. Some students wish to become jazz or contemporary music improvisers, others want to develop their theory and ear training skills to be able to lift the theme to their favourite tv show, a movie soundtrack, or video game. This performance of music ex tempore or 'in the moment' is a fantastically enjoyable and useful ability for all students of the piano.
*As vaccine rollout and continued vaccination against Covid 19 allow for an easing of health precautions and social distancing, in person lessons will be eventually available, but for the moment, all lessons are conducted over the internet.*
